7   Link   Diabetic Hypo Alert Dogs
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or the avoidance can be a daily problem for people with diabetes, this complication has very distressing effects and can be life threatening. Hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) can cause major health complications such as heart disease, amputations and sight loss.

Because of their acute sense of smell our dogs are trained to detect both hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia. They can warn their owners and get help even before symptoms of these conditions are felt.

We are now working with Endocrinology Specialists at Bristol NHS Trust and Researchers at Bristol University to try and establish exactly what it is the dogs are detecting.

The Bournemouth Diabetes Team (BDEC) have been running structured education programmes since 1999 to teach people with type 1 diabetes how to match their insulin dose to the amount of carbohydrate they eat. They have used their teaching materials to develop an interactive website, specifically designed to introduce the principles of carbohydrate counting and insulin dose adjustment. The site is ideal for people who wish to learn these principles but do not have access to a local education programme, or as a refresher for people who need to update their skills.
